Friend of mine just bought a 2010 Audi A3. looking forward to picking it up on fri, but he has a question.
does the stupid thing have a timing BELT or CHAIN? cant find anything online and well, if it has a belt its getting up there for the milage.

Guessing a belt, since I can buy a replacement?

Does it have the 2.0T or 3.2?
![]() 10/24/2018 at 09:53 |

Wait, you could still get the 3.2 in 2010, right? D:

1.8 T?

Find the factory recommended maintenance cycle. If it has a belt replacement cycle you have a belt.
facw also pointed out another route.

Yup, RA ’s m y favorite quick way to check that.
If only it were so easy to check for interference/non-interference engine. There are a few lists online, but none of them are comprehensive enough to say for sure that this is non-interference.

2.0

dont think so. and the 2.0 was abetter motor in either case. easier to tune. doesnt make chewbacca noises though

assuming it’s a 2.0, belt:
and IIRC those earlier VWAG direct injection engines were notorious for carbon deposits on the intake valves and ports.

translation: drive it hard, got it :)
its got 3 years / 60K km warrenty on it, so it shoudl be good.

I’m pretty sure the 2010 2.o turbo A3 has the same 2.0 turbo engine as my 2012 GTI, so that would be a timing chain in that there machine.
Since there’s been a TON of issues with VW/Audis with a timing chain, contact a reputible shop or Deutch Auto Parts (a great online retailer of VW/Audi parts) to make sure. If it is a timing chain, your friend could be able to get a new chain, and better guides installed for free. Provided it hasn’t already been done in the first place.
A shop in Salt Lake City looked up my VIN and saw I had an updated engine, but I still need to keep my ears open for anything that doesn’t sound right.

Checkout shopdap.com for more contact info.
I think Unitronic is in Canada, they’re a very repudable aftermarket company for VW/Audi, they can help you too.

with DI fuel never touches the intake ports or valves. the problem with the VWAG DI engines is they didn’t design sufficient oil catch traps in the PCV system, so the crankcase vapors are laden with oil mist which gets sucked into the intake. without port injectors to wash it off of the port walls and intake valves, it just bakes on and builds up.
when it gets bad, the only solution is mechanical (abrasive) cleaning. some places blast it with chopped up walnut shells.
this is a potential problem with all direct injection engines (gas or diesel,) but some have better PCV filtration than others. Installing an auxiliary catch can may help slow the progress of gunk build up.

how long does that usually take to form? car has 122K on it....(roughly 77K miles)

Yeah, that’s no biggie to clean the intake. Can’t be any worse than the 4.2 or like mine the 5.2. 10 cylinders to clean, good times were had. But the four pot shouldn’t take too long. At least you shouldn’t have to pull the nose off or any craziness like that. Should be less than $800 at a dealer and probably half that at an Indy shop.

You’re probably into the time when you may want to clean it up. If it has misfires on cold startup, that’s a dead giveaway. I did my S8 at 50k miles. And it wasn’t terrible, but definitely not great in there.I believe they make some nice catch can systems for the 2.0Ts too.

My 2013 GTI, 75k runs completely fine but I’ve noticed what sounds like a slight miss or running rough for about a second when cold starting. Same before/ after new plugs. Could it be carbon?

ring an Audi dealer with the vin and ask

My S8 has been running rough too when cold, but no codes or anything. From what I’ve been reading about it, it’s somewhat normal as the cold startup has added parameters to get the cats hot. I’m less than 15k miles from my last carbon cleaning, so I’m not thinking it’s that, more to do with the temperature and the emissions settings. One of these days it will pop a code on one of the modules I’m sure. But for now, no idea.
If you’re not getting a MIL then I wouldn’t worry too much.

Big issue for that motor, assuming 2.0T is the timing chain tensioner issue.
